One of my favorite holiday side dishes!

This is a family recipe that we have every year for the holidays. The onions are covered in a creamy sauce that is perfect for sopping up with a roll. I’ve never had them anywhere else so it’s a special dish I only associate with my family’s holiday traditions.

Creamed Pearl Onions
Ingredients
- 28.8 oz Frozen pearl onions You can use fresh as well. Make sure neither have skins left on them.
- 1/4 cup salted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 tsp kosher salt
- pinch black pepper
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 5 Tbsp grated parmesan cheese plus more for the top
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- If you're using fresh pearl onions, peel and boil onions in a large saucepan with water just to cover the onions. Cover and simmer about 20 min. or until tender. Drain onions well. If using frozen pearl onions, make sure they are as thawed as possible.
- Melt butter in medium/large saucepan on medium heat; blend in flour, salt, and pepper.
- Gradually stir in broth and cream; stir consistently until slightly thickened, and covers the back of a spoon.
- Stir in cheese and parsley.
- Remove from heat and add onions. Stir to cover onions with sauce.
- Pour onions and sauce into a 9×9 baking dish and cover with a layer of parmesan cheese, however much you like. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
Enjoy!
